Guide to Cap Ferret

Introduction

The pine-covered Cap Ferret peninsula is all about magical coastlines, delicious fine seafood dining, and authentic holiday experiences. Found just south of the Medoc, 30 miles west of Bordeaux, this narrow peninsula is beach heaven, with a 22km stretch of fine sand on the Atlantic coast.

This coastline is wilder here, with thick pine forests and towering sand dunes, but when you reach the expansive beach of Cap Ferret, you will feel like you have reached another world. Be sure to break away from your luxury villa rental to discover Dune du Pilat, Europe’s tallest sand dune. Climb to the top at sunrise or sunset or the most breathtaking views.

The best way to explore Cap Ferret is by bike. There are plenty of bike paths and hire shops to make it easy, and it means you can head further afield from your luxury beach villa to new coves and discover local markets. You won’t be disappointed with a trip to Cap Ferret village. It is the place to head for chic shops and the freshest oysters straight from the sea. The characteristic Arcachon town sits across the sea from Cap Ferret. Get lost walking down the alleys, stopping in boutiques and watching the locals play games of boules.

Despite being relatively undiscovered, Cap Ferret offers some of the best luxury french villas, all wonderfully located to make exploring the area as easy as possible. Whether you want a family villa with a private pool, a modern and slick private home, or a beachfront villa so you can wake up to views of the ocean, we have made sure our edited collection of luxury villas in Cap Ferret are truly the best of the best.

We don’t do ordinary here. We are a small team of experienced travel specialists, no request is too big or too small, so please do ask for our help in finding you the perfect luxury holiday villa in Cap Ferret for rent.

Things to do

Best for sundowners

Sail Fish is the ultimate sunset bar in Cap Ferret. With delicious cocktails and food, cold local wines and the option to stay dancing into the night, you’ll be forgiven if you return to this trendy bar again and again.

Cabane d’Hortense has breathtaking views of the Dune of Pilat and is a real gem. This quintessential French restaurant is popular with both the locals and visitors, so we advise booking early.

For a warm and welcoming atmosphere, head to Emilie et une huitre, a chic open-air tavern. Fresh seafood, attentive service and sand beneath your toes – bliss!

Best restaurants

Chez Hortense, near La Pointe du Cap Ferret, offers a menu of decadent comfort food, all whilst you enjoy spectacular views in a beautifully landscaped garden – this place should not be missed.

Chez Boulan, in the Phare area, is where you can get your Oyster and seafood fix. The restaurant is linked to the family fish shop and everything they serve is fresh and delicious – and best pairs with cold local white wine.

Chez Magne is set within a 19th-century building, a former foresters’ canteen, and is one of the best restaurants in Cap Ferret.

Best for exploring

Dune du Pilat is a must-visit during your villa holiday to Cap Ferret. Head to La Pointe du Cap Ferret on the Southwestern tip of the peninsula, which will give you the best view of the Dune du Pilat, the Bay of Arcachon, and the Atlantic Ocean. There is a nature trail which runs parallel to the ocean for about 4km which will take you there.

Languedoc-Roussillon essential visit

Tyring oysters should be high on everyone’s list when visiting Cap Ferret. Hire bikes and cycle to La Canfouine in the fishing village of Le Canon, about 7km north of Cap Ferret. Relax and enjoy views of both the oyster beds and the Dune du Pilat beyond.

Best Beaches

Plage Oceane de l’Horizon is a long golden sand beach that faces the Atlantic Ocean and feels fairly wild and rugged.

Situated between the Theirs and Eyrac piers, Plage d’Arcachon Beach is the main beach in front of the town. It is a white sandy beach and is sheltered from the strong Atlantic winds.

With wonderful views over to the chic town of Cap-Ferret and the peninsula beaches, Plage Pereire Beach is a wonderful fine sand beach stretching for 3km.

When to Visit

Cap Ferret benefits from a Mediterranean climate, which means mild winters and consistently dry, sunny summers, with moderate springs and autumns. To really appreciate this area, come in June when the pine forests are at their best and the local area is magical. The peak summer months are when the temperatures are at their highest and the area comes alive – perfect for a luxury beach villa holiday. Travelling in May and September is best for those wanting to escape the crowds and feel like you have the beaches to yourself.
