Guide to Lake Como

Introduction

Lake Como is one of Italy’s most popular holiday destinations and is second to none when it comes to luxury villas. Shaped like an upside-down Y, Lake Como is extraordinary, surrounded by the Rhaetian Alps and verdant hillsides. This famous lake has been a popular retreat for the rich and famous for centuries, and it is clear why. Boasting stunning scenery, private homes and artistic and cultural gems, there is no place quite like Lake Como.

Known as the ‘Pearl of the Lake’, the village of Bellagio enjoys a magnificent setting on the promontory dividing Lake Como from Lake Lecco.  Divided into 22 hamlets, each mirrors a unique aspect of the lake. Abundant with traditional buildings and ancient stone lanes, Bellagio is quaint and hugely popular thanks to its shops stocked with the finest Italian products and produce. Where better to buy local produce before dining at your luxury lakeside villa in Lake Como?

If you are looking for a quieter village to visit, Varenna is a traditional fishing village with waterfront cafes and beautiful gardens, and across the water to the southeast of Bellagio lies the medieval village of Argegno. Here you can hop in a cable car to the mountain village of Pigra, where you will get to enjoy some of the best panoramic views of the lake and the surrounding mountains.

Navigating around Lake Como couldn’t be easier. You can hop on and off any of the brilliantly run ferries (either with your car or on foot) to discover different villages or and discover new shores – adding to the gentle pace of life on the lake. If you are a family with young children, the ferries are an exciting part of each day’s activity.

Our luxury villas in Lake Como cater to every taste and requirement whilst all being unashamedly fabulous. Whether you want modern and contemporary, traditional Italian architecture, lake views or a private location we will be sure to find the perfect Lake Como villa rental for you and your group.

We don’t do ordinary here. We are a small team of experienced travel specialists, no request is too big or too small, so please do ask for our advice if you are planning to book a luxury villa in Lake Como.

Things to do

Best for sundowners

T Bar at the Grand Hotel Tremezzo – There is no better place for an Aperol Spritz. The T Bar has unparalleled panoramic views of Lake Como, Bellagio and sunsets over the Grigne Mountains, plus live piano music every evening.

Varenna Caffè – Located in one of the most beautiful towns on Lake Como, Varenna Caffè boasts fabulous views of the lake. Order an aperitivi and relax under the huge umbrellas whilst enjoying the surrounding scenery.

Terrazza 241  The magnificent outdoor terrace offers a relaxed yet glamorous atmosphere and is the perfect spot to enjoy cocktails, Italian wines and champagnes.

Best restaurants

Barchetta  – Found within Hotel Barchetta, this bistro is situated on the lake right in the centre of Como and serves Mediterranean, regional and local dishes, all served within a beautiful setting.

Isola Comacina  Everybody has to eat just once. Perfectly perched on the island of Isola Comacina, this stunning restaurant can only be reached by boat.  Offering a set menu, you do not have to worry about what to have, but will be treated to a variety of fresh and innovative dishes.

Kitchen – This is an elegant restaurant immersed in the botanical garden of Sheraton Lake Como Hotel. Here you will be able to enjoy Italian flavours with a modern twist.

Best for exploring

Milan – Only 1.5 hours away, take a day trip to Milan to indulge in some shopping and trying more local Italian dishes.

Wine tasting – Many of the villages and towns offer the opportunity to enjoy a wine tasting experience. Cantina Follie in Tremezzo is recommended – here you can enjoy a tasting at the wine bar tucked away in the cellar of an old house in the town centre of Tremezzo.

When to Visit

The weather in Lake Como is at its hottest in July and August when it can reach 30°C. Temperatures are warm from March to November yet it can be prone to rain showers off-season. It is a stunning destination for a luxury villa rental any time of the year, as the small villages surrounding the lake each have their own charm and are steeped in history.

Getting Here

The nearest airport to Lake Como is Milan Malpensa International Airport, which is almost 25 miles south of the town

Hiring a car isn’t recommended as it is not essential during your time in Lake Como.  Please do ask our team if you would like us to organise a private driver service for you.

We recommend hiring a boat for the day to explore some of the more of the local villages. Just let us know what you’d like to do and our team will be able to organise something extra special.

Our website offers a small flavour of the many houses we work with and some of our owners prefer to remain anonymous.
